Unpack & Pass Along Cards

                                                                                                                                 Mon. May 27, 2013
Good Afternoon!
I finally feel like I'm all settled in and getting into the swing of things :) I unpacked my suitcase for real today. It felt super great because I've basically been living out of a suitcase for the month of May. Hahaha.

Canada. Is. Awesome. I thought it would be pretty similar to the US, but no. It's so diverse and crazy. I love it :) Here are some reasons why I love it. 1. Milk comes in bags... Crazy eh?! (PS. The correct way to say "bag" in Canada would be bay-g. No joke.) 2. People push around carts with all their stuff in it. Normal people. Not just homeless people. I thought there were TONS of homeless people everywhere until my companion told me that was normal. I'm getting used to it. 3. There is a restaurant called Tim Horton's and they're EVERYWHERE! They are as common as McDonald's in the US, but it is not like McDonald's. At all. It is fast food, but it's fresh. And oh so good! It's like a fast food cafe. It's hard to describe... But they serve bagels, muffins, doughnuts, sandwiches, etc. All of my favorite things. It's pretty much heaven. 4. People really do say "eh" :) I love it! One of my goals is to adopt the Canadian accent. Pretty good goal eh?

We had a few dinner appointments this week, which is unusual in a singles ward because college students can barely feed themselves :) So it was a really nice way to meet members and teach their non member friends. One of my favorite things is the vast differences in culture!  Therefore, at these dinner appointments, we had some pretty interesting food... It was all super good! I just didn't know what some of it was, and didn't bother asking :)

We are still teaching Theo and he is actively preparing for his baptism on June 9th! He came to church yesterday and talked more in gospel principles than the teacher! I was amazed at his knowledge of the Bible. We are teaching two other investigators that also have a baptismal date of June 9th. Jason and Brendan. They are all super great guys and I think they will be ready. That will be a big day for us :) Think of Theo, Jason, and Brendan on the 9th. We also started teaching a guy named Adam this week. He told us about how he feels like something is missing in his life and every time he prays a little part of that void is filled for a moment. That's why he agreed to meet with us. We taught him the Restoration and I felt the spirit so strong in that lesson. It was definitely one of the most powerful lessons we've taught. He is so excited about the Book of Mormon and committed to read this week. Our next lesson with him will be on Friday so I'm way excited for that!

It's incredible how the Lord just fills you with love for the people you serve. My calling before I came on my mission was in the nursery. I sang songs with the nursery kids for the last 15 minutes of church and it was the highlight of my week! I still pray for those kids and love them so much! That same love fills me every time we talk with someone on the street or teach a lesson. I love being a missionary! Yesterday after church we went to visit a recent convert named Conrod, but he wasn't home, so we contacted (walked around and talked to people on the street) around that area. We talked with 3 guys that seemed really interested and prepared to learn about the gospel. Tyler Brown, Damian, and the last guy was a man named Diego. Diego was sitting on the curb with his head in his hands looking really sad. We went over and started talking with him. We found out he was from Guatemala. When we told him we had a message that could bring him peace, he looked at our name tags and was so excited to be talking with us! We gave him a mormon.org card that had our number on it and he called us about five minutes later asking if he could talk to me again :) Hahaha. We wont be able to teach him because we are in a YSA ward, but we will refer him to the Spanish Elders and they will take good care of him. It really strengthened my testimony of the reason I'm here.

We also had another really cool experience on Saturday. We went to an apartment complex to visit a recent convert named Sandra, but she wasn't home. So we just decided to knock doors on our way down the stairs. One of the doors we knocked on was answered by a black lady named Ria and her little girl. I asked the little girl if she wanted a picture of a castle :) (aka- the pass along card of the Salt Lake Temple.)  Then we told her mom that because of that building and the things we do inside that building, we can be with our families forever! We set up an appointment, but once again, we cant teach her because she's not YSA. So we also referred her to some other Elders who will teach her all that she needs to know. I actually really love talking with people on the street and knocking on doors because people are just so different!

Church was awesome yesterday! I got called out of the audience to bear my testimony because there was a gap in the program that needed to be filled. So naturally, everyone wants to hear from the new kid :) I'm glad I had the opportunity to bear my testimony because it strengthens my testimony every time I share it. And I share it a lot these days :) Wow I'm blessed.

Thank you for all of your love and support! I love being a missionary and telling people why I am so  happy! I know that God lives and that His Son, Jesus Christ, not only died for us, but lives for us. That knowledge makes me want to live for Him as well. Keep smiling and have a great week :)

Arrive In Canada!

                                                                                                                                          May 22, 2013
Hello Everyone,
I hope you are all well! We (meaning the 11 new missionaries) left the MTC at 3am on Monday morning, got on a plane at 6, then made it to here by about 3ish. Exciting huh? :) We met President and Sister S at the airport and I absolutely LOVE them. I am so blessed to have such a great mission president and mission mom! We stayed in a hotel that night then went back to the mission home the next day to meet our trainers.

My trainers name is Sister W. We get along really well and I think we'll have a super successful transfer together! As a mission, we have a goal to find 100 new investigators in May and then have 60 baptisms in June :) It think it's possible! We pray to reach these goals in every prayer. After we met our trainers and had lunch, Sister W informed me that we had three teaching appointments that day! So we definitely hit the ground running :)

Our first lesson was with a guy named Theo. Sister W and Sister E met him Monday night in the parking lot of a pizza joint. He has been looking for a religion to join and wants it to be the right one... Can you say GOLDEN?! They asked him when he wanted to meet, and he said, "How about right now?" So they taught him the restoration while sitting on a curb across the street from the temple. He has a really strong desire to be baptized and go in the temple someday which is so incredible. We taught him the plan on salvation and touched on the Word of Wisdom yesterday then walked around the temple because he wanted to go over there so bad :) In our lesson we had talked about what the spirit feels like, so when we were on the temple grounds he said, "Remember that warm feeling we were talking about? I feel it right now." :) I'm so excited for Theo! I think God knew that I would need an investigator like Theo in my first week in the mission field. I dont believe in coincidences. He has a baptismal date set for June 9. So pray for Theo :)

Our other two lessons were with a guy named Dylan and Abraham. Dylan flat out told us he isn't interested, so I dont know if we'll see him again until his heart is softened. And Abraham is really confused because the Jehovah's Witnesses have been talking to him too. We just answered some of his questions and talked a lot about the Book of Mormon with him. He really just needs to pray and ask God if the Book of Mormon is true. Then life will be smooth sailing :)

Sister W and I live in a little apartment. We are serving in a YSA ward and it's a BLAST! Our area is huge so we have a car. It's definitely a blessing because it's been raining on and off for the past two days. I cant believe the humidity too! Wow! Since I have never left the western US before, this is a little bit of a weather shock :) I walk out our front door and it feels like I just walked into a bathroom after someone took a hot shower! Hahaha. That's the best analogy I can come up with.

We visited the mission office and went grocery shopping today. Which has definitely been a good thing because we had zero food. Which is no bueno :) So I bought stuff to make southwest chicken, poppyseed muffins, malibu chicken and all that jazz. Sister W is pretty happy that I can cook :) Hahaha.

I love my mission. One of the highlights of the day is putting on my name tag every morning. What a privilege it is to be serving a mission at this time! I know I am exactly where the Lord wants me to be right now and that is seriously the best feeling ever. I know God lives and that we are His children. He loves us and is mindful of us. My testimony of prayer has been strengthend immensely in just these past few weeks! I feel like I am praying every 5 minutes :) Hahaha. I just know I can't do this alone.

Love and prayers forever, B

                                                                                                                                                                                               May 15, 2013

Hey Family & Friends!
This is my only Prep day here, so this is the only email you'll get from me while I'm in Provo! Crazy eh?! :) We got our travel itinerary a few days ago and we fly out on Monday. There are 11 of us flying out that day including my companion, Sister S, and I. We need to leave the MTC at 3 in the morning because our flight takes off from Salt Lake at six. Bah. It will totally be worth it though! I'm SO PUMPED TO GO TO CANADA!! :)
This first week has been INCREDIBLE! Incredibly spiritual. Incredibly hard. Incredibly busy. Just simply incredible :) We have hours and hours of classroom instruction  everyday. It's been a little rough because I haven't been to school for the past year, so it's taken some adjustment. I have been learning so much though. I love my teachers! Brother A is from Ghana and has a super sweet accent! Brother C served his mission in Australia and teaches in a way that is really easy for me to understand. He taught us the difference between doctrines, principles, and rules. I feel like my understanding of teaching doctrine is increasing everyday. My favorite part of being a missionary in the MTC is the way in which I can tangibly feel the presence of the Holy Ghost with me. It's like I have two companions :) It's really incredible.

My companion, Sister S, and I have been working on memorizing D&C 4. We have a goal to always be memorizing something. Whether it's a scripture, a quote, something from PMG, etc. I have loved the opportunity to study D&C closer. You should go read it...Right now :) Sunday night was probably my favorite night here. We had a devotional then we had the choice of watching a church movie or a General Authority talk. Sister S and I went and watched a talk that Elder Holland gave in the MTC years ago. He said exactly what I needed to hear. He said things like, "You won't ever be full time again for the Lord. DON'T MISS IT!" "Since this is the Lord's work, you have to do it His way, and by His rules." "Go out and astonish somebody." "The road to salvation goes through Gethsemane." "We have to be strong because Christ was." That last quote really hit me hard. It's helped me so much this week when I find myself needing to refocus on Christ.

Guess who came to the MTC last night?! RUSSELL M NELSON! That's what's up :) His wife, Wendy, spoke too and she said something I'd never thought of before. She said, "Pray to be led to those whose ancestors are praying for you." I've thought about how joining the church will effect future generations, but past generations? Now that's awesome! :) Sister and Elder Nelson talked a lot about the millions of people praying for the missionaries from both sides of the veil. This realization has definitely been a blessing. Elder Nelson also said, "In order to put Christ first, you need to lose yourself." I've thought about that a lot. And I think part of "losing yourself" is burying the parts of yourself that aren't so Christlike. For example, the Anti-Nephi-Lehis burying their weapons of rebellion. Sister S and I have set goals to help us with that. So it's been a great seven days in the MTC :)

THANK YOU FOR THE DEAR ELDER LETTERS! I thought the mail scene in the best two years was a little bit of an exaggeration... No. It's real. Missionaries love mail, email, pictures. Ya know. Just any proof that you are still living :) Hahaha. I LOVED the last letter you sent! Elder B, our district leader, handed it to me as I was typing this email. Thank you thank you THANK YOU! So thank you for the love and support. I feel your prayers

I'm sharing a room with five other sisters! Our room is seriously a cloud of hairspray when we leave for study in the morning. It makes me laugh :) Ps. I keep finding random note cards in my luggage... Thanks

Thank you so much for your love and prayers! Keep smiling and have a great week! I'll call you early Monday morning :) Never forget how much I love you!
Love and prayers forever, B
